What is a Good Amount of RAM?
8GB of RAM is enough for most of us.
There was a time when ram mattered more and I’m loathe to say this because I feed my family with the stuff – there’s a good chance the RAM installed is enough. In 2012, and on a notebook computer that means you’ll usually have about 4GB of ram installed, or if you end up buying an older computer you may have 1GB of RAM or maybe 2.
Netbooks are another story. In an effort to keep the cost of the netbook down the computer manufacturers skimp on RAM and if there were ever an increase in performance for your netbook that’s super cheap then adding RAM is the ticket.
But if you’re surfing and blogging and maybe running a small video or photo editing with your notebook (or desktop too) than you will be OK with 8GB of RAM.
What about 16GB?
Some notebooks today ship with 4GB and could be upgraded to 16GB. The Apple MacBook Pro is one such notebook. The problem I find with buying and installing 16GB of RAM into your notebook is that even with the recent price drops on 16GB notebook memory you still end up paying more for 16GB of RAM.
A case study that’s far from scientific is I am writing this on a 2011 Mac Mini and with 8Gb installed I still have 3GB of RAM free. I have over a dozen applications open and to be honest I find no need to buy more RAM than 8GB.
This will change over time as the 16GB prices keep on dropping and dropping, it’s only a small matter of time before you can buy 16GB of RAM, but for now – 8GB of RAM will do you just fine.

This little Apple notebook on sale actually comes with a fair amount of RAM out of the box, but as this is designed as the professional notebook computer, that means that there’s a good chance you will be working with your new notebook, so the negligible cost of adding more MacBook Pro RAM is so little, especially if you upgrade your MacBook Pro with 8GB of DDR3 1333Mhz RAM, the sweet spot when it comes to MacBook Pro memory upgrades for 2011.

Usually, I would suggest you use the savings of buying an Apple notebook from Amazon to buy more RAM, but the Apple MacBook Air is one of the only notebook computers made by Apple that don’t allow you to upgrade the RAM on so be sure you really won’t need any more RAM in the future for this notebook as you will be limited to the 2GB DDR3 of memory. If you use programs that require memory usage, you might be better off buying a faster Apple notebook with a bigger display and more memory capacity than what this cheap MacBook Air can offer. But if you’re just using the Apple MacBook Air for home and home office or for a secondary notebook perhaps, you will love the startup speed thanks to the solid state drive technology the Macbook Air boasts, as well as the lightweight and feel only an Apple notebook can provide, making the Apple MacBook Air one of the best notebook computers you can buy today.

I like to save money on Apple stuff. In fact, that’s the reason I started ramseeker over a decade ago, as RAM was – and still is overpriced when you buy direct from Apple, but this also holds true on Apple notebook computers too, and here’s a perfect example: If you buy this 2.2 Ghz MacBook Pro with a 15 inch display from Apple directly you’ll pay full pop – the $1799.99 MSRP. But if you buy the exact same notebook from Amazon you save $89.00. I don’t know about you but $89.00 is savings worth paying attention to. 89 bucks buys you a nice notebook case, or a dinner out, or maybe you just want to save money on Apple Macbook Pro’s.
Amazon offers the Apple MacBook Pro 2.2 Ghz for just $1709.99, for an $89.00 savings off the full list price for this fast notebook. This professional notebook computer from Apple features a fast Intel Core i7 processor running at 2.2Ghz, 4GB of DDR3 RAM (you’ll need more, I’ll get to that in a minute) a 500Gb hard drive and Mac OSX Lion with a seven hour battery life all as standard equipment.
There’s cheaper notebooks on sale from Apple, but if you’re wanting a fast Apple MacBook Pro that is truly still a portable notebook, a $100 savings (ok, close) is a good deal on a 2011 Apple MacBook Pro.
Apple MacBook Pro 15 inch 2.2 Ghz Memory Upgrades.
Even with the fast processor, this Apple Macbook Pro can accept more RAM and if you want to max out the ram on the Apple MacBook Pro 2.2 Ghz 15 inch all the way to 16GB you will need to buy two 8GB DDR3 sodimms. The ram prices for 16GB MacBook Pro are dropping, but at the time of writing can be a bit pricey still when compared to the 8GB memory upgrade kit that will still allow you to double the RAM on your 15 inch MacBook Pro 2.2 Ghz and have money left over. If you opt to buy the 8GB RAM kit for MacBook Pro you will be able to double the RAM for less than the $89.00 savings, so even when adding more memory to the Macbook Pro 2.2 Ghz, you still come out ahead than if you were to buy the MacBook Pro direct from Apple.

The Apple Macbook Air 13 inch is one of the best selling Apple notebook computers today, and with a sale price of $1234.99, that’s a $65.00 savings off the MSRP of $1299.99. The Apple MacBook Air features 4GB of DDR3 SDRAM and is one of the very few notebook computers you cannot update the memory on, so you’re stuck at 4GB of DDR3 memory. This might not be a big deal if you are using the MacBook Air as a lightweight notebook you can use for your day to day computing, but in 2011 8GB of ram for MacBooks is where I’d like to see the MacBook Air upgraded to.
The good news is the MacBook Air models offer some of the fastest startup times on a modern notebook today thanks to the speedy 128GB solid state drive installed. The latest version of Mac OSX and a seven hour battery life round out the feature set on the Apple MacBook Air, and with a savings of $65.00, this is a much better deal than buying a MacBook Air from the Apple Store.

Can DDR3 1600 Memory Be Used in Apple Computers?
Not Yet.
At present, all currently shipping Apple computers use DDR3 1333MHz as the fastest ram available for Apple computers. In the upcoming months, this may change as new Apple computers are released in 2012, but for the time being we’re stuck with 1333Mhz as the fastest RAM you can install in any Apple computer model
MacBook Pro models use DDR3 sodimms with a maximum of either 8GB or 16GB of RAM, depending on who you ask. Officially, all the MacBook Pros max out at 8GB of DDR3 1333 Mhz memory, but since released in Feb 2011, 8GB DDR3 memory modules have become available for sale and with the price dropping, 16GB of RAM for MacBook Pro is starting to become affordable.
iMacs can accept more ram than the MacBook Pros thanks to more real estate to work with, as four memory upgrade slots are available for upgrades. Like the MBP’s the iMacs officially max out at 16GB but some have reported on 32GB of iMac memory working just fine.
The Mac Mini is the smallest and cheapest Apple computer on sale today, but the same rules apply to the Mac Mini as it does with the MacBook Pro – 8GB max, so say the folks at Apple. One thing to note is that if you can swap out ram between the iMac/Mac Mini/MacBook Pros as they all use the exact same memory upgrade in a 1333Mhz DDR3 sodimm format.
Even the Apple Mac Pro is still limited to 1333Mhz RAM upgrades and like the other model above – you can have a maximum ram for Mac Pro of either 32GB or 64GB. The Mac Pro is getting a bit old in 2012 so it’s not too surprising that 8GB DDR3 sodimms were not available on sale, resulting in a maximum of 32GB (4GB x 8 slots)
I have no doubt that in time we will see DDR3 1600 memory requirements for Apple computers, but for 2011 and into 2012 you are limited to using DDR3 10600 memory upgrades for Apple computers
