Buy the Nikon D800

 

 

This new Nikon D800 and it’s sister – the Nikon D800e looks to be quite the digital camera for 2012 and even though it’s a lot of money for some, (yours  truly  included) if you’re in the market for the latest and greatest digital camera technology in 2012 when it comes to DSLR’s this looks to be the ticket.

Nikon D800 Features 

I’ll get around to all the technical specs in a moment, but this is the newest camera you can buy from Nikon today ( I never did like Canon, so it’s not really in the works) and yes, it will cost you a pretty penny you get a brand new Nikon D800 to use and  all the  features to go along with it too. If you are an early adopter you get a great deal on a  D800 as the camera will last  you the entire lifetime from release date until when you upgrade.

Nikon D800 Specifications and Features 

The sensor, at 36.3 megapixels simply blows the other cameras out  of the water.  That’s 3x the resolution of my Nikon D300 I am currently shooting  with.

In 2012, full HD  video shooting is possible with even the cheapest of digital cameras, but when combined with the high  resolution, you’re sure to get some  great videos. I plan to start shooting more when the weather warms up  and I would love to add video and the flexibility of DSLR lenses to my camera bag of tricks. To be completely honest all the HD video specs of this  brand new camera overwhelm me.  I started shooting with film in a darkroom. HD video is a brave new world.

The 51 point autofocus is the same as  the Nikon D700 and D300 so this is underwhelming  to me. I am sure the autofocus is going to be faster than a 3 year and almost five year old camera is,  but I have never had any problems with autofocus shooting on my Nikon D300.

The LCD display is self dimming and .2 inches bigger. I don’t feel that this is much of  an upgrade over either the  Nikon D700 or Nikon D300 with their 3 inch LCD displays. You may get some better battery life out of the Nikon D800 because the screen won’t take as much juice when compared to the full on Nikon D700, but I doubt  it makes much difference in real world use.

The built in HDR, while looks cool and for some offers real neat images, I prefer to shoot more natural looking scenes.  Cool, but I wouln’t pay the money for it personally.

 

Buy a Nikon D700 instead .

Due primarily to budget constraints, and the fact that photography is a hobby for me at most this looks  like the best deal on a digital SLR from Nikon right now, but I had better not wait to buy a Nikon D700 as  it won’t be long  before you can’t buy a Nikon D700. If you’re looking for a brand new Nikon D700, don’t wait too long before they’re all gone.

Speaking of  used, this is a possibility  to those  that  are patient and can wait for the perfect used Nikon D700 to pop up. I have seen used Nikon D700′s go for as little as $1500, which is  half the price of the Nikon D800, and assuming a current street price of about $750.00 for the Nikon D300 the total cost to upgrade to FX from DX, which is my main requirement would  cost me about $750.00 in total, about 1/4 the cost of brand new Nikon D800.

Nikon D700 Specifications

The 12.1 megapixels is the exact same as I have with the Nikon D300 – I would gain no megapixels here with this  upgrade. To get more resolution I’ll have to buy the  Nikon D800.

The low light shooting range goes to ISO 6400, which is just fine for me as I prefer to shoot when there’s light to see, and except from the FX shooting format, that’s the big difference between the Nikon D700 and the Nikon D300.

 

Keep the Nikon D300 and  live with  the DX format.

 

 

This probably makes the most sense fiscally, as I have no funds for a camera upgrade right now anyway.  I may be tempted to trade my Nikon D300 and 18-200 for the Nikon D700, but I wonder if this makes the most sense? I really miss the fact that I can’t  shoot wide and fast, as  the only wide lens I have is the Nikon 18-200mm and it’s slow at f/3.5 I’d love a 2.8, which  I have, but with the DX format, my 24mm  lens turns into about 25mm. I miss shooting wide with digital.

Shoot Film 

Buy an old film camera instead. You can buy a whole lot of film and processing for 3 grand – the cost of  the new Nikon D800 and  instead pick up a used Nikon F5 for about $400  to shoot wide with. Photography is just a hobby, and so  yes it’s a bit more hassle  to shoot film but I think that you become a better shooter  if you only have 36 chances for the shot.  Digital  is great for so many things and my Nikon D300 is a joy to use.

Buy a fast wide DX lens. 

Or, a cheaper zoom like a 10-24mm DX lens under $500 to test the waters of wide angle shooting.  But, this is just a kludge because if I can I would like to get away from shooting DX  and go with FX if I can swing the upgrade cost to the thousand dollar range. I doubt I could justify any more money for a hobby.

Sell all the FX lenses and go with zoom

I started shooting in the 1980′s so I am kindof partial to shooting with fixed lenses, but one option would be to keep the Nikon D300 and let the 18-200 go and use the proceeds towards two fast zoom lenses. One for the wide shooting, and one lens  for telephoto  shooting.

 

For now, I am going  to stick with my Nikon D300 and  the 18-200mm zoom lens as this stuff is already bought and paid for. If I could swing  a deal on a Nikon D700, I might be tempted to upgrade as the FX format is tempting for wide shooting, and just for fun I may pick up a Nikon F5 or even a F4 if I could find one just to shoot film as it’s been years since I shot film and the cost for cameras that shoot film is negligible.

I would love to buy a Nikon D800 and I envy those of you that can do this without paying attention to cost, but I need to feed my family before I buy another digital camera.

My guess is in about six months or so from now, maybe in time for back to school in 2012.

Let’s face it. If you want to buy the best computer online today you buy an Apple notebook.  If you don’t believe me, just have a look at the best selling notebooks at Amazon where 7 out of ten best sellers in the laptop department are Apple notebooks –  not windows PC’s.

But for the rest of us who actually work for every penny we spend, the opportunity to buy an Ultrabook at half the price of an Apple product is too great to ignore for some of us. At least it is for yours truly. I would love to buy a brand  new 2012 Apple MacBook  Air  if and when they are released but when you can get pretty much the same computer capable of the same tasks for half the price, one  might argue in favor of the Windows machine.

UltraBooks Cost Too Much

The problem with the first generation ultrabooks, and to some extent some of  the new 2012 ultra’s, is that at current retail prices they are too close to the price of an Apple MacBook Air for me to be willing to put up with the Windows experience when  can buy a MacBook Air for about the same dough.

For a comparison of Ultrabooks vs MacBook Air’s, I am not going to compare every last detail as there are differnces in the technical specs, but in my mind there’s two reasons to buy this new brand of notebook computer: size and weight, and hard drive speed thanks to the solid state hard drives included in these.

A 13.3. inch Apple Ultrabook costs just over $1100 on sale at Amazon and  the Acer Aspire S3 costs $799 from a variety of online vendors  including Amazon.

The Air has features the S3 doesn’t have but they both offer SSD hard drives and light weight at about 3lbs each. The difference for the  most part is operating system and $300. As I write this, I might be tempted to go with the MacBook Air  - assuming I can find the price difference.

Unless I really needed to buy an UltraBook today, I would wait until we see a half price ultrabook. By half price, I don’t mean half the pric of regular price, but at a price point where I can buy two ultrabooks for the price  of one MacBook Air and currently that means there has to be a $550 Ultrabook for these lightweight windows notebooks to really take off.

To be fair, it’s hard to buy a full featured notebook for that price, so let’s offer a little wiggle room and say that for me  to  buy a PC ultrabook over a MacBook Air  the ultrabooks need to drop  in price to the $500-$700 range. All that’s stopping them is the cost of the solid state drive, and with SSD drives continuing to fall it’s just a matter of  time before this happens.

We’re off to a good start with a $100 off Ultrabooks startin to appear, we just need to see the prices drop another hundred dollars at least for these small notebooks to start selling in quantity.

One of the big deals about the Ultrabook noteooks is the size vs weight ratio.You still get a full featured notebook computer but without having to slug around a  big and bulky notebook computer and the Asus Zenbook comes in at a very light 2.87 lbs, about half the weight when you compare it to cheaper notebooks on sale. The other factor is hard drives in the Zenbook.  More traditional notebooks come equipped with standard hard drive technology, whereas this Asus ships with faster SSD hard drive technology. At 256GB, this may not be enough hard drive space for you as even the cheapest notebook on sale today will ship with more hard drive space.
